The italian government conducted recently a census of Rroma living in camps around Rome, Naples and other major Italian cities.
Contrary to what the press headlines might have indicated, this rather controversial census listed 12,346 Rroma, roughly half of which were minors, living in camps around the major Italian cities.
One is far from the headlines in some countries citing over a million Romanian Rroma living in Italy. In fact, even if the census failed to record all Rroma, something that is almost certain, the actual number of Rroma in that country is far lower than the dfear inducing captions in the press.
There are however more than a million of Romanians living in Italy. The majority of them has been there for more than 10 years, and the recent extension of the EU to Romania and Bulgaria has not changed much to this.
