Czech Racial Discrimination Case

22-March-05

A court case was won by a Rromni against a company accused of racial discrimination. The woman filed a suit after she was denied a job as a saleswoman. Ms. Dunkova applied to the job after seeing an advertisement in the shop in Prague but her application was turned down immediately upon entering the shop. She was told the position was no longer available. But Ms. Dunkova was working with a human rights group, and a few minute later, a non-Rroma member of the group entered the shop and applied to the very same position. She was given an interview immediately.

The Prague High Court ordered the shop to apologise to Ms. Dunkova and pay 1,000 USD in penalty. It is to be noted that this is by far not the only case on discrimination issues in the Czech republic, but few of these, if any, are won.
