International Romani Union Protests about Lety

14-May-05

Sixty years since the end of World War Two. One camp, and its victims – Lety – , is still ignored by the Czech Government. Instead of a monument and a reminder of the tragedy that took place in Lety, one finds a hog farm. Besides the bitter taste this leaves when one think of the memory of the victims of this camp, the Czech government still ignores the tragedy of the Roma victims in their own country, a tragedy in which Czech themselves actively participated.

The IRU is formally protesting against the Czech Government and appeals all, be they governments, organisations, or individuals, to write and protest. The Czech Government should and must take quick action to remove the hog farm, to formally acknowledge the victims, and to arrange for a proper memorial to this camp where so many Roma were tortured, sent to their death, or killed.
