The ancient neighbourhood of Sulukule, an old settlement within the historical city limits of Constantinople is currently being destroyed. Rroma have lived there since the Byzantine times, and are now being expelled from their homes to make way for new developments.
Neither the fact that this neighbourhood is under Unesco protection nor that Rroma have traditionally lived there, has so far prevented the Istambul authorities to deviate from their plan. Rroma are relocated outside of the city in appartment blocks without any compensation.
